Give your child the opportunity to scribble and draw – let them write a shopping list or sign a birthday card. They don’t have to do ‘proper’ letters yet. Let them try different crayons, pens, pencils, chalks and paints.
Scribbling and pretending to write gives great pleasure and helps them to control their hand movements.

When writing with your child we find it is better in the long term to use the correct combination of CAPITALS and lower case letters. CAPITAL LETTERS are easier to copy BUT lower case is better to help your child to become a good writer.
Story books are very important to children – even babies need books! Make it a happy, enjoyable time together with a cuddle and a book.
Have a go at telling stories to your child. You can tell them a story about when you were young, or make up a story about one of their toys. Encourage the children to join in, ask questions and guess what will happen next. Then your child can have a go at making up his/her own story.
