Everyday toys such as building bricks, shape sorters and games help children to remember shapes, to look at what’s the same and what’s different. Picture dominoes and playing cards are useful too – you can play ‘Snap’ and ‘Pairs’. Jigsaws and puzzles encourage children to look at shapes and to complete a picture.

Encourage your child to look at all the words and letters around your home and in the neighbourhood. Read the street signs as you go shopping or on the way to school. Help them to recognize the labels on packets and tins at home and on the shelves at the supermarket.
We set an example to our children – they copy lots of things we do. Let them see you reading books, newspapers or magazines, and writing a letter, filling in the order form for the catalogue and doing the lottery. They will see that reading and writing are interesting things to do and will want to join in.
