Policies

Building at Greenacre NurseryThe school has a range of written policies which set out the way in which it intends to educate the children, and other related issues. This documentation is available for all parents to view at any time.

The curriculum is set out under six headings covering the areas of learning as follows:-

The policy on Personal, Social and Emotional Development includes a section on sex education; this will be taught in the context of relationships, through a variety of themes, which introduce concepts at the appropriate level for young children. Parents are welcome to spend some time reading this document, and to approach the headteacher who will be happy to answer any queries confidentially. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from any activity/experience.

Managing behaviour

Children’s behaviour is seen as the responsibility of the staff while he/she is in school. Parents will only be informed about an incident if it is serious and involves a personal injury to another child, e.g. a bite. Both sets of parents are then informed. Most other incidents arise through accidents, or a bit of rivalry for a favourite tricycle or model car. Children at this age are inclined to be at the early stages of learning to share, and this is part of normal development. Staff support children in coming to terms with the disappointment and frustration of having to “take turns”.
The emphasis in this nursery is generally placed on the "good" behaviour which we wish to encourage, e.g. we might say, "Can you walk?" rather than "Stop running!" We make it clear that it is the BEHAVIOUR which is unacceptable, not the child himself, e.g. "That's an unkind/dangerous thing to do," rather than "You're a naughty boy." We try to "catch the children being good” so that we are praising more than we are criticising - this makes for a more pleasant, peaceful and positive atmosphere for everyone.
