Greenacre Nursery School, Bootle: Home Page

Welcome!

Greenacre Nursery School in Bootle, Liverpool, is maintained by Sefton Council Children’s Services, with places for 40 children at each session. It was purpose built in 1976. It is set in extensive natural grounds, often described as “an oasis in the heart of Bootle”. Developments include a vegetable garden, willow structures, a musical garden, an adventure trail and a small wood. Trees and shrubs have been selected with regard to variety of leaf shape, blossom and fruit, and are now established and mature. The development of outdoor learning is an ongoing priority in the school’s improvement plan, taking account of issues of gender, learning styles and emotional intelligence.

The curriculum is child-centred, recognising play as an appropriate vehicle for young children’s learning and encouraging children to be active learners. In particular, the outdoor learning environment is given equal emphasis with the indoor, and we spend as much time in it as possible throughout the year. The Early Years Foundation Stage (DCSF 2007) forms the basis of our planning across six Areas of Learning – Physical Development, Communication Language and Literacy, Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creativity. Experiences are generally cross curricular; for example a cookery session would generally include opportunities to develop scientific thinking, mathematical skills, speaking & listening, social skills, physical dexterity and technological awareness.
